New exhibits which focused on natural habitat for species began to take shape. The African Veldt, now called the Savanna, opened in 1986 with giraffe, gazelles, cranes and other species in one huge exhibit. The cheetah exhibit was opened and the Cheetah Watch Team formed to collect data that would help cheetah sustainability in zoos around the world. Births continued with the 200th Arabian oryx born in 1988 and the birth of another endangered species, the Grevy’s zebra born in 1987. Sumatran tiger Ime came to Phoenix in 1986 and Ruby the elephant became famous for her paintings.
Tomorrow is the last day of 80s fun, so don’t miss out!
