Historical Retrospective: End of the 80s

Posted by on 10 / 25 / 2012

Milestones are reached throughout the Zoo as it celebrates its 25th anniversary during this decade, growing into the largest privately funded zoo in the country.  Educational programming makes major advances withCampZoo, the beginning of the ZooTeen program, and the first programs for children with special needs.  Major exhibits, such as the new elephant enclosure and the African Veldt, today’s African Savanna, are opened, in line with the Zoo’s goal of providing more natural habitats for its animals.

“More and more species will face two simple alternatives:  survival in captivity – or extinction.”
Dr. James C. Savoy, third director of the Phoenix Zoo.

Be sure to check back next week for 90s pictures and memories! See you soon!
