Historical Retrospective: More 1960s

Posted by on 10 / 9 / 2012

To continue with the historical photos from last week, here’s a little bit more information on the 1960s and the Phoenix Zoo.

What once started as a discussion between husband and wife, turned into the creation of the Phoenix Zoo.  Robert and Nancy Maytag, while chatting one evening, decided that the Valley of the Sun needed a Zoo – and so it began…

The 1960s brought lots of community support, lots of construction and lots of animals.  The Zoo opened its doors on November 21, 1962 and began its legacy of conservation, education and fun: our first Arabian oryx, a species considered extinct in the wild, was born in October, 1963; “Summer Institute” began in 1966; animals were moved to new homes – and some were brought to the Animal Nursery.
